Radio Free Weser Special - How Soccer Explains Globalization, Economics, Politics and Society

On Wednesday, September 18 I (Patrick) was fortunate enough to be a presenter at Westminster College's 2013 Symposium on Global Sport, in Fulton Missouri.

The talk was just over an hour, and was titled "The Ball is Round: How Soccer Explains Globalization, Economics, Politics, and Society"

Topics included such disparate subjects as:
- The Role of Egyptian Ultras during the recent revolutions
- The Old Firm Rivalry and the role of religion in Scottish Soccer (C'MON YOU BHOYS IN GREEN!)
- How we are already seeing the signs that the Bundesliga is on its way to dominating Europe, and its links with Germany's consolidation of financial power in the continent
- How US Soccer, through the gradual elimination of protectionist financial policies in Major League Soccer, is finally beginning to integrate with the global soccer economy.

As always thanks for listening!

Episode 8 - Derby Wins, and a question of Momentum

We're back!

On this episode of Radio Free Weser, the ever-present Patrick is joined by Bjorn, one of our favorite Werder correspondent behind enemy lines in the Hanseatic Second-city of Hamburg.

During the program the two friends discuss:
- Werder's 2-0 Victory away to to a Hamburg squad in crisis.
- Nils Peterson's discovery of his shooting shoes
- Robin Dutt's decision to play strikers as strikers, and midfielders as midfielders
- How other squads in the Bundesliga are fairing with a few games under their belts, and what the struggles of clubs like Schalke and Freiburg mean for Werder
- As always, we talk about Sebastian Mielitz...3 clean sheets is good...right?
- Former Werderaner doing well at other teams - this week: Florian Trinks and Mesut Ozil.

Thanks for listening!

Episode 7 - Torhüter, Transfers, and Testimonials

Welcome to (the slightly belated) Episode 7 of Radio Free Weser!

In this episode, Patrick is joined by another member of the Werder exile community in Hamburg, Bjorn Behm. The two discuss last weekend's unfortunate 1:4 loss away to Borussia Moenchengladbach, with particular attention given to, yes, you guessed it, Sebastian Mielitz. After that, Patrick and Bjorn discuss the end of the transfer window, and discuss whether or not Marko Arnautovic's departure is cause for celebration. In the last segment, the boys look ahead to this weekend's Torsten Frings Testimonial, and salivate over the chance to see some of Werder's legends of recent memory together again at the Weserstadion.

Also in this show:
Who do you loan a player from when the player isn't owned by a club?
If Michael Shumaker played soccer, would he really play anything other than striker?
Is Tim Wiese available for wedding parties, bar mitvahs, or as a replacement in goal?
